THE SHORT ANSWER

Can you earn college credit in high school that counts at Florida State University?

Yes, with conditions. Florida State University awards credit for AP scores of 3 or higher, IB scores of 4 or higher (its table starts at 4), AICE results and CLEP scores of 50 or higher, up to 45 semester hours from those four exam types combined. Dual enrollment credit transfers with an official college transcript, and grades below C can put an admission offer at risk. FSU makes the final credit decision after it receives your scores and transcripts.

  • Up to 45 semester hours can come from AICE, AP, IB and CLEP exams combined.
  • CLEP requires a score of 50, and four CLEP exams earn no credit at FSU.
  • A student earning an A.A. degree along with a high school diploma applies as a first-year student.
  • Credit is awarded only once for the same subject, whether it comes from an exam, dual enrollment, transfer or an FSU course.
  • Every FSU degree requires the last 30 credit hours to be completed at the university.

This is editorial guidance, not a transfer decision. Acceptance depends on the institution, program, catalog year, and credit source. A credit recommendation—including ACE—does not guarantee acceptance. Confirm with the receiving college.

AP EXAMS

Does FSU give college credit for AP exams?

Yes, with conditions. Yes. FSU's AP table lists course credit for scores of 3, 4 and 5, and a higher score often adds a second course. Florida law requires an annual review of the qualifying scores and courses, so the table can change.

Examples from FSU's table: Calculus AB with a 3, 4 or 5 earns MAC 2311 (4 credits); English Language and Composition with a 3 earns ENC 1101 and with a 4 or 5 earns ENC 1101 and ENC 1102; Psychology with a 3, 4 or 5 earns PSY 2012.

Precalculus with a 3 earns MAC 1140 (3 credits), and with a 4 or 5 adds MAC 1114 (3 credits).

Does FSU accept International Baccalaureate (IB) credit?

Yes, with conditions. Yes. FSU's IB table lists awards for exam scores of 4, 5, and 6 or 7, and shows separate rows for standard-level and higher-level exams in many subjects. The page says credit may be awarded for other exams based on content and score.

CLEP EXAMS

Does FSU accept CLEP exams?

Yes, with conditions. Yes, with a score of 50 or higher on the exams in FSU's table. FSU's CLEP page says four exams receive no credit: Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, College Composition Modular (no essay), Natural Science, and Social Science and History.

Examples from FSU's table: College Algebra earns MAC 1105 (3); American Government earns POS 1041 (3); College Composition (includes essay) earns ENC 1101 (3) and ENC 1102 (3).

The page adds that no credit is awarded for ENC 1102 if credit has already been earned in ENC 1101.

DSST EXAMS

Does FSU accept DSST exams?

Not confirmed. Not confirmed. FSU's accelerated credit page lists AICE, AP, IB and CLEP as the exam programs that count toward its 45-hour limit and does not list DSST. Ask the Office of Admissions before you test.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

Does dual enrollment credit transfer to FSU?

Yes, with conditions. Yes. FSU says an official college transcript must be sent to the Office of Admissions before you enroll, and students with any grade below C are subject to having the admission offer rescinded. Credit is awarded only once for the same subject.

Minimum to earn credit
No grade below C; official college transcript sent before enrollment

Dual enrollment courses become a permanent part of your college transcript regardless of the grade earned.

A high school student who earns a standard diploma and an Associate in Arts degree must apply to FSU as a first-year student and meet first-year deadlines.

If both transfer credit and exam credit apply to the same subject, FSU's page says transfer credit takes precedence.

TRANSFER AND FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE CREDIT

How does community college credit count at FSU?

Yes, with conditions. FSU accepts transfer credit from nationally accredited institutions for coursework with a grade of D- or better. A student who completes an A.A. degree at a Florida institution has it recognized as satisfying the first 36 hours of CoreFSU, but still has other graduation requirements to meet.

Minimum to earn credit
D- or better at a nationally accredited institution

Transfer credit is applied in one of three ways: toward a major or minor, toward a general education requirement, or as a general elective.

The bulletin says students with an A.A. from a Florida public community college or university, or with 52 or more transferred hours, can be admitted directly into the college of their choice.

To apply as a transfer student, you need 12 or more semester hours of transferable college credit earned after high school graduation.

AICE EXAMS

Does FSU give credit for Cambridge AICE exams?

Yes, with conditions. Yes. FSU publishes an AICE table of course equivalents at the AS and A levels and counts AICE toward the 45-hour limit shared with AP, IB and CLEP. The page notes the table is subject to Florida's annual review.

Important limitations

A credit award is not the same as meeting a requirement in your major. FSU applies credit as a major or minor requirement, a general education requirement or an elective.

FSU's exam tables are subject to change because Florida law requires an annual review of qualifying scores and courses, so check the table for the year you test.

The last 30 credit hours of a degree must be completed at FSU, and only a maximum of six of those hours may be completed elsewhere, in an emergency, with the academic dean's approval.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions

How do I send AP, IB, AICE and CLEP scores to FSU?+

FSU says official test scores must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions, and the Transfer Student Success FAQ lists exam results among the documents to submit if you earned college credit.

Can CLEP credit count toward FSU's last 30 hours?+

Only if you have earned at least 30 credit hours at FSU. The bulletin says CLEP credit may be applied to the final 30-hour requirement provided that condition is met.

Does FSU treat students with an A.A. from dual enrollment as transfer students?+

No. FSU's first-year application page says a high school student earning a standard diploma and an A.A. degree must apply as a first-year student.

What does FSU offer its own high school students for dual enrollment?+

FSU's Collegiate School dual enrollment page says courses are free to students and families, but it is for FSU Collegiate School students only, with the number of courses rising by grade level.
