THE SHORT ANSWER

Can you earn college credit in high school that counts at Liberty University?

Yes, with conditions. Liberty University awards credit for AP scores of 3 or higher, most CLEP exams at 50, and IB scores of 5 or higher, using equivalency guides published by its registrar. College courses, including dual enrollment, transfer from an accredited institution, and Liberty's catalog sets the minimum grade at C-. Residential and online undergraduates follow the same catalog rules, and at least 25% of a degree must be earned at Liberty. Liberty makes the final credit decision.

  • AP credit starts at a score of 3, and each exam maps to a specific Liberty course or an elective in the registrar's AP guide.
  • Most CLEP exams need a 50; French, German and Spanish language exams award more credit at higher scores.
  • IB credit needs a 5 or higher: most higher-level exams earn six hours and most standard-level exams three hours of elective credit.
  • Liberty's own dual enrollment for high schoolers runs through Liberty University Online Academy and requires a 3.0 GPA and age 14 to 20.
  • Residential and online undergraduates share the same transfer rules, but a few course equivalencies differ by format, such as BUSI 105 (residential) and BUSI 101 (online).
  • Liberty's catalog lists a C- minimum for transfer credit, while some Liberty transfer web pages say C; confirm your grade with Transfer Evaluations.

Keep your destination in mind.

This is editorial guidance, not a transfer decision. Acceptance depends on the institution, program, catalog year, and credit source. A credit recommendation—including ACE—does not guarantee acceptance. Confirm with the receiving college.

DUAL ENROLLMENT AND COLLEGE TRANSFER CREDIT

Does dual enrollment credit transfer to Liberty University?

Yes, with conditions. Usually. Liberty's catalog accepts undergraduate transfer credit from an accredited institution for a grade of C- or higher, in coursework similar to Liberty's by at least 60%. Courses without a match can transfer as elective credit, and remedial courses do not transfer.

Minimum to earn credit
C- or higher (catalog); accredited institution; at least 2/3 of Liberty's credit hours
Limit
At least 25% of the major and 25% of the degree must be completed through Liberty

Transfer credit appears on the transcript with a grade of P and does not count in the Liberty GPA.

Liberty's registrar and residential transfer pages state a minimum grade of C rather than C-, so confirm the grade requirement for your course with Transfer Evaluations.

Liberty sorts students into class standing by transferred hours: freshman is 0 to 23.99 hours, sophomore 24 to 47.99.

Overview

Liberty University is a private university in Lynchburg, Virginia with a residential campus and a large online program, Liberty University Online. Its academic catalog publishes separate resident and online policy pages, and the transfer credit rules on both are the same.

Liberty's registrar publishes equivalency guides for AP, CLEP, DSST and other exams, plus course guides for partner community colleges. Scores and transcripts are sent to the admissions verification office, where Transfer Evaluations staff award credit.

Editorial transfer-policy summary

Liberty's catalog accepts undergraduate transfer credit from accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, for a grade of C- or higher. Coursework must be similar in content and scope to a Liberty course by at least 60% and meet at least two thirds of Liberty's credit hours to count as that course.

Liberty's online transfer page says students can transfer in up to 75% of a degree, stated as up to 90 credits for undergraduate programs. The catalog's residency rule is that 25% of the major and 25% of the degree must be completed through Liberty.

Liberty's catalog also notes that the transferability of credit earned at Liberty is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

Important limitations

A credit award is not the same as meeting a requirement in your degree plan. Courses with no Liberty match transfer as elective credit, and programs can require specific courses.

Liberty's catalog lists a C- minimum for transfer credit, but its registrar and residential transfer pages state a C. Ask Transfer Evaluations which applies before relying on a C- grade.

The pages reviewed do not state a separate overall cap for AP, CLEP or IB credit, or say whether it counts toward the 25% residency rule. Ask the Transfer Evaluations office.

Some upper-level accounting, computer science and other courses carry a five-year transfer age limit, per the registrar's transfer page.

Liberty University Online Academy dual enrollment is offered to students enrolled through that school, and Liberty does not publish a price for it on the pages reviewed.

Common questions

How do I send AP, CLEP or IB scores to Liberty?+

Liberty's Transfer Equivalency Guides list pre-approved courses from several colleges, and its Transferable Credit Hours Calculator lets you add courses. For a course not listed, submit a Future Course Evaluation Request in the Transfer Suite.

Are SAT or ACT scores required to apply to Liberty?+

No. Liberty's resident admissions catalog says test scores are not required for admission, but CLT, SAT or ACT results may be used for merit-based aid.
